AMATEUR ATHLETICS

ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS MEETING AT BASIN RESERVE Over a thousand people filed out of tbe Basin Reserve last night after witnessing a successful opening of the AA’ellington centre’s amateur athletic and cycling season. Close, and in many cases, thrilling, finishes more than compensated for the cold wind which blew across the ground. Variety was the keynote of the big programme, which was mad up of walking running, field sports, hurdling. ladies’ racing, and cycling. The thrill of the evening proved to be the three miles scratch race, which resulted in H. Scarfe beating AV. Bray by a length after a stirring tussle. A novelty event in the form of a tricycle race for boys was very amusing. There were large entries in practically every race, and the meeting went with a swing from start to finish. The special announcing apparatus which had been installed proved a distinct success and was much appreciated. . . Results in detail are as follow.
