TRADE OF AUSTRALIA AND CANADA
QUESTIONS AWAITING NEGOTIATION (Australian Press Association.) Ottawa, November 19. Pending formation of the new Australian Commonwealth Government, Canadian officials will not commit themselves upon the recent Australian tariff ruling adding freight at point of water shipment to the value of the commodity in the country of manufacture as the basis of duty. This, along with a number of other matters, including fruits and vegetables duties, and the complaint of British Columbian lumbermen, will form subjects for friendly negotiations between the two Governments in about six weeks' time. Railway officials and shippers do not anticipate any serious effect if the ruling becomes effective. Vancouver shippers are laughing over the new regulations. An export authority says “Gilbert and Sullivan never put anything more ridiculous in comic opera.” One result will be that the Eastern Canadian shippers will send over the United States railways, and the United States over the Canadian railway. Until then British Columbian exporters get the preference, as all products are manufactured at tidewater.
