VISCOUNT HAMPDEN

Viscount Hampden, chairman of the National Mortgage and Agency Com-p-iuv of New Zealand, arrived by the Maunganui from San Francisco yesterday on a visit in the interests of his company, of which he has been a director since 1909. He was met on arrival by Mr. G. R. Ritchie, general manager of the company. Viscount Hampden, who is accompanied bv Viscountess Hampden and their second daughter, the Hon. Barban Brand, will make a tour of the Dominion before returning home Viscount Hampden, who, prior to succeeding to his father’s title, was Briga-dier-General Thomas Walter Brand, has had a distinguished army career. He was born in 1869, and is the eldest son of the 2nd Viscount Hampden and Susan Henrietta, daughter of Lord George Cavendish, brother of the ith Duke of Devonshire; lie married in 1899 Lady Katherine Mary Montague-Douglas-Scott, daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch. He entered the Armv in ISS9, served in South Africa from 1599 to 1901, was mentioned in dispatches, and attained the rank of major. In the Great War he was mentioned in dispatches seven times, was promoted to the rank of brigadier"eneral and was awarded the honours of C. 8., and C.M.G. He was appointed a Lord-in-Waiting to His Majesty the King in 1924.
