REVOLVER FIGHT WITH POLICE

• WOUNDED PRISONER SENTENCED Sydney, November 5. Edward Joseph Coffey has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for shooting with intent to evade arrest. Coffey is on crutches as the result of a bullet wound in the spine from a police revolver. He denied any intention of shooting at the police, adding that his revolver went off accidentally when the police shot him down. [Early in May, Coffey disappeared. He was supposed to have been drowned while bathing at Bondi while on bail awaiting trial on charges of stealing motor-cars. The drowning story was viewed with suspicion, but the police were unable to trace the man until August 10, when a patrol party in a motor-car was scouring the Mascot district, where it was believed that Coffey was hiding. They sighted Coffey, who simultaneously recognised the police and made off. A long chase followed. Coffey refused to stop when called upon, so a shot was tired over his head. He drew a revolver and returned the (ire. In the next few minutes a running light was maintained, and a number of shots were exchanged, till at length Coffey was stopped by a bullet in the back and quickly overpowered. In his possession was a revolver, all eight chambers ofwhich bad been discharged.]
