PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

fl! CHEMICAL SECTION. At the final meeting of the cliqralcal section of the Philosophical Society held at Victoria College recently, two-papers of interest were given before a good attendance of members. Tlie first paper, “A new method for investigating complex salts,” by Mr. Hughson, dealt with an extension of a well-known property possessed by layers of nhenol (carbolic acid) and water, lhere was a definite or "critical’? temperature to which they must be warmed before they would mix completely, lie said. By adding increasing proportions of salts, a graph could be made which would show tlie change in.critical temperature due to the systematic addition of a foreign substance. Bv adding definite proportions of another salt, a fair idea might bo obtained of the chemically-interesting complex salts, by - observing tlie deviations of tlie observed eritieal temperatures from those : which would 1)0 ordinarily expected supposing no formation of complex salts had taken place. The.second paper, "Waters for Industrial Use,” was read by Mr. W. Donovan. This dealt with the properties required by and the impurities to lie avoided in, watersupplies iu industries in which a good grade of water was of vital, importance for example, brewing, textile manufacture, and dveing. When the water was somewhat Impure, there were many inethods for treating the supply, the main examples being mentioned. Tlie speaker also discussed the requisite properties ot a good boiler-water and its treatment, and he further described the effects of corrosion and boiler-scale. Several chemical analyses of boiler-waters and scales were detailed, which were correlated with their practical results. , , Both speakers were heartily thanked. An election of officers for the 1929 season took place, the following being appointed: —Chairman, Mr. A. I). Monro; secretary, Mr. C. R. Barnicoat: committee, Messrs. W. Donovan, Franklin. Izdtt, Joiner, Lawrence, Leighton.
