The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup), accompanied by Mrs. Troup, returned to Wellington yesterday after a visit to the Royal Show at Palmerston North. I Sir Ernest Musgrave Harvie, chief cashier of the Bank of England, is re- t tiring on pension on November 6; He will probably be appointed to the directorship in the place of the late Sir George Arbuthnot, states an Australian Press Association-United Service message from London. Sir Truby King arrived by the Wahine from the south yesterday morning. Mr. W. E. Calder, secretary of the Royal Wellington Choral Union, is visiting Auckland. Captain R. C. Hammond, of the Northern Steamship Company, Auckland, is on a visit to Wellington. The Rev. J. L. Greer, formerly of .Northcote, Auckland, has been appointed Anglican vicar of Norfolk Island. The Rev. W. J. Elliott, president of the Methodist Conference, arrived in Wellington yesterday. CaptaimT. T. Hugo, inspector of fire brigades, was among the passengers by the Wahine from the south yesterday morning. Mr, L. O. H. Tripp returned to Wellington by the Wahine from the south yesterday. Tlie Rev. J. R. Blanchard, minister of St. John’s Church, Willis Street, has returned to Wellington after a fortnight’s absence in the South Island, where he was engaged as convener of the Presbyterian Assembly’s Temperance Committee lecturing on prohibition.
Lieutenant J. Bennett, of the Ist Battalion Wellington Regiment, has resigned his commission as from October 12.
The funeral of the late Mr. H. Baldwin, of Lower Hutt, 4ook place at the Karori Cemetery on Thursday. Representatives of every local body and sports body, and other organisations with which the deceased had been connected, were present, besides members of the Fire Brigade and numbers of personal friends. The wreaths were carried on the fire engine. The pall-bearers were the Mayors and chairmen of each of the surrounding local bodies and representatives of education, in the Hutt Valley, and of the Masonic Lodge. The services at the graveside were conducted by Archdeacon A. L. Hansell, and for the Masonic Lodge by Wor. Bro. Smith, of Lodge Waitangi, and Wor. Bro. Martin, of Lodge Hinemoa. Among those present were Mr. J. Dunnett, District Chief, A.0.F., and Mr. A. W. Travers, District Secretary, A.O.F.
Captain G. Hooper, nautical adviser to the Marine Department, has joined the Sir James Clark Ross at Port Chalmers, and will journey, to Stewart Island on that vessel.
The Commissioner of-Police (Mr. W. B. Mcllveney) is on an official visit to the South Island.
.Mr. V. E. Sanders, of the Dannevirke Power Board staff, has been appointed to the position of secretary of the Poverty Bay Power Board. The number of applicants totalled 119 from all parts of the Dominion.—Press Assn,
