THE PRAYER BOOK
CONTROVERSY IN ENGLAND / SUGGESTION BY DEAN INGE THAT BISHOPS EXCHANGE DIOCESES (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) London, November 1. Dean Inge makes a remarkable suggestion in an article,, on the Prayer Book controversy in “The Church of England Newspaper,” that the Bishop of London exchange dioceses with the Bishop of Gloucester. He 'declares that the voting at the London Synod most plainly that the Bishop could no longer carry the majority of the clergy of London with him. The clergv were undoubtedly a stiff-necked and difficult body. yet. if the future of the Church depended on a strong, uuswerving administration, by each individual bishop, the question must be faced whether it was possible to restore order, and tighten the reins of discipline under the present regime in the greatest of all English dioceses, “Personally. I feel that if an amicable exchange could be effected the difficulties of the new Primate would be lightened I know I am greatly daring, but even the most brilliant administrator may outlive his usefulness, and a. change almost for the sake of change is sometimes. desirable. It is distressing to hear the young men speak impatiently of the heroes of one’s own generation who have stayed overlong for their own repute.” The “Dally Express” editorially describes the suggestion as a bombshell. Whether he is aware of it or not. Dean Inge has practically repeated in the sphere of clericalism the “Balfour must go” movement.
