“SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER”
PLAY BY QUEEN MARGARET COLLEGE PUPILS.
The girls of Queen Margaret College gave a performance of Goldsmith’s comedy. “She Stoops to Conquer,” last night, in Bryant and May’s concert hall, which had be<Sn lent for the occasion by Mr. W. McLay. The stage, though small, was well arranged, with curtains as background. The young actors made the most of the facilities provided, while the dressing of the performance was exceptionally good, the full skirted coats, full panmered dresses, the high white wig of Mrs. Hardcastle, and even the smocks of the country bumpkins being all well carried out. Queenie McLean gave a capital performance as Mrs. Hardcastle, and was ably supported by Winifred Male as her uncouth son Tony Lumpkin, while Marguerite Thompson as Kate, and Ina Troup as Constance Neville, were a charming couple. Jean McLay enacted the puzzled Mr. Hardcastle, Nancy Wilson was the shv and bold Mrs. Marlow, Kathleen Hobv his friend Hastings, Stewart Hamilton the landlord, Mollie Foster the maid. Nan Shaw Sir Charles Marlow. Jean Preston Roger, and Mary McLeod a« capital Diggory, while Andrew lorns and Stewart Hamilton as the other two country louts, brought in to act as servants, were equally amusing. The whole performance reflected great credit on the girls and their teachers. During the intervals pianoforte pieces were played. Bessie Farley played an old English donee, by J. Nares. Julie Mans gave an old English dance (W. Sheld), a minuet, and Nocture (John E|jld).
