AN OLD OFFENDER

IMPRISONMENT FOR THREE MONTHS

PASSING VALUELESS CHEQUES Mastertoil, November 2. A long list of convictions was admitted by H. T. Judd, alias William Perfect, saddler, aged 34 years, who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on six charges of obtaining a total of £2O Ils. 3d. in money and goods to the value of £3 18s. 6d., by means of valueless cheques. Accused elected to be dealt with summarily, and pleaded guilty to all charges. t Sergeant Dyer said accused had a wife and four children, and came from Opotiki. He arrived in Greytown on October 26, and there cashed several of the cheques, passing another at Tauherenikau. He represented that he had a farm outside Pahiatua, and that he was the son of a well-known farmer formerly resident in Greytown. When approached by the police, accused had been very frank about the whole matter. He said he had an idea the police .were looking for him. Accused had further stated that drink had been his downfall. Most, of the money accused had obtained by means of the cheques he had spent on liquor.

To the Bench, accused admitted convictions for assault, obscene language, keeping liquor for sale, forging and uttering, and false pretences. Sergeant Dyer mentioned there were other charges pending against accused. On the last occasion Judd came before the Court he was admitted to probation, but he had failed, it was alleged, to comply with the terms. The Bench remarked that in the present case probation was out of the question. Accused had not benefited by his previous detention, and it was fitting that he should be sent back again. Accused was convicted and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent, following which he is to be detained for reformative treatment for a period of two years. ,
