MAIL TRAIN RUNS INTO SLIP
ENGINE DERAILED PASSENGERS ESCAPE WITH SHAKING Dominion Special Service. Masterton, November 1. A railway accident occurred this afternoon, when the down mail train to Wellington ran into a slip three-quar-ters of a mile north of Mangamohe, near Masterton. The train was rounding a turn in'a cutting when the slip came into view. The driver, R. Jamieson, pulled up with great promptitude, thus averting a more serious accident, and although the engine headed into the debris and overturned, the velocity of the train, which was travelling at 35 miles an hour, was considerably reduced, and the passengers in the cars escaped with only a shaking, nobody being hurt A relief train was sent from Masterton for the transhipment of the passengers, who were enabled to depart from Masterton for the journey to Wellington at 5 p.m., three hours after schedule ■ time. A large gang of men was sent from Eketahuna to clear the slip, which is a serious one. It is hoped to have the slip cleared by to-morrow morning, but if that is impossible, or if further debris falls, then arrangements are to be made for the transhipment of passengers. “MARVELLOUS ESCAPE.” Speaking to a “Dominion” representative last night, a passenger on the train said that he considered that those on board had a marvellous escape. He said that when the engine struck the slip it jumped the rails, travelled On for some time, and came to a stop just when the guard’s van was level with the fall of earth. Fortunately the locomotive did not swerve in its course along the sleepers.
