WIRELESS TELEPHONY
INCREASE IN SERVICE ACROSS ATLANTIC ADDITIONS TO RUGBY STATION (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, October 30. The steady increase in trans-Atlantic wireless telephony has necessitated the provision of additional buildings and apparatus at Rugby Wireless Station. Meanwhile, the General Post Office is in communication with the Governments of Australia, South Africa, and India, with a view to bringing the whole of the Empire within reach of the human voice. The service with Canada was opened a year ago, and has worked most satisfactorily. A telegram received from Cairo announces that telephone conversations from an air liner in England have been picked up'distinctly there. The conversations were sent out by a VickersRolls Royce machine which was carrying out experiments with short-wave wireless telephony. This is claimed as a world’s record in long-distance telephony transmission from an aeroplane in flight. FURTHER SCHENECTADYSYDNEY TESTS (Australian Press association.) New York, October 29. A Schenectady message states that, encouraged by the results of the last Friday's telephonic tests, the General Electric Company will repeat the experiment on Wednesday. Representatives of American newspapers and the Australian Press Association, as well as Mr. Dow, Australian Trade Commissioner, will attempt to communicate wit It Press representatives and others in Sydney. MUSIC BY PHOTOPHONE * (United Service.) (Rcc. October 31, 7.15 p.m.) Vancouver, October 30. Through apparatus by which an electrical impulse was controlled bj’ a beam of light, a narrow beam was cast about an Atlantic hotel room, and changed into music and held under perfect control at will by Mr. John Taylor, consulting engineer for the General Electric Company. The equipment used.is known as ti photonhone, built on old principles, with a perfected photo electric tube, electric pick-up, new amplifiers and sound reproducers.
