International importance attaches to tlie inauguration of a new railway from Nice to Coni, reducing the distance from Nice to Turin by CO miles. The new line runs via the Alps and includes tunnels of a total length of 15 miles. 31. Tardieu, at the opening, pointed out that the line was originally planned for military purposes, but would be used for peaceful commerce. He hoped it would help France and Italy to know each other better.
