FRUIT AND VEGETABLE MARKET
POSITION IN WELLINGTON. The Director of tbe Horticulture Division has received the following report from the fruit inspector (Mr. A. Dicker) on the condition of Wellington-grown fruit and vegetables in shops and auction rooms and the market conditions for the month of October:—
A good demand has existed for apples and pears of good quality, but the bulk of those offering has been fruit of inferior equality, and the supply somewhat irregular. “Fancy” grade lines of both Delicious and Sturmer are commanding good prices. Pears have been in fair supply, but the quality has not been up to the desired standard.
New potatoes arc In keen demand, but the supply has not been sufficient to meet requirements, ’ consequently prices are not steady, but quickly fluctuate according to the quantity available. The supply of last season’s potatoes would appear to be low. preference being given to the new season’s lines.
Cook Islands tomatoes have been in demand owing to there being so few of the local-grown ones on the market yet. Spring produce, botlt root and green, is now in free supply. The packing of cabbages and cauliflowers has shown much improvement of late, this fact being freely commented upon by retailers at the markets.
The following is a fair average of prices realised:—Apples: Stunners, fancyt Bs. to. 10s. 6d. per bushel case; Delicious, fancy. : 7s. to 9s. 6<l. per bushel case; Washington. : fancy, 10s. to Ils. per bushel case.
