THE ROYAL SHOW

CHEERLESS WEATHER FOR SECOND DAY ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME OFFERED SHEEP. CATTLE, HORSE, AND PIG AWARDS ' ' i ■ \ ; ... ' .. . ; Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, October 31. There was only a slight improvement in the weather for the second day of the Royal Show in Palmerston North, an intermittent drizzle making conditions unpleasant throughout the morning and a dull overcast sky lending a cheerless aspect to the scene. There was a very good attendance of the public, however, and in the afternoon and night the exhibit halls and side-shows were thronged.

The programme for the day was a very attractive one,- consisting chiefly of horse events on the oval. .There, were good entries for the events, especially in the jumping classes, and the various riders showed conclusively that the day is yet far distant when horsemanship will be a forgotten art. At night there was whippet racing, by the Manawatu Whippet Racing Club, and the Y.M.C.A. gave a gymnastic display. Both events were watched with interest by a large crowd of spectators. An outstanding event of the day was the opening, of the Manawatu Kennel Club’s show, which is always run in conjunction with the Manawatu A. and P. Association’s Spring Show. Entries for the events were well up to the standard of previous shows, and the standard of the entries was excellent. Visitors to the show included Captain Orr-Ewing, A.D.C., and Mr. A. C. Day, official secretary to the Governor-General, who were entertained at an official luncheon by the Manawatu A. and P. Association, presided over by the president of the association, Sir -Douglas McLean. A telegram was received by the committee from the Minister of Agriculture (Hoii. 0. J. Hawken), who expressed regret at being unable to be present at the show, and who proffered best wishes for the success of the event. <• The judging of the pifes was completed this morning, when a fully representative showing of 28 entries of large blacks were adjudicated upon by Mr. C. Dauvergne. An Interesting feature was the success achieved bv the progeny of Gape Orpheus (imported) and Gape Forest Echo (imported), which included the champion sow, Weraroa Athena, with a litter of 10 and her two full, sisters with litters of .8 and 9. as Second and third prize winners. ' Another fullsister won the second prize-for breeding sow. ■ / ' CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS- ' PIGS Large Blacks. —Boars: D. and S. Ross's Weraroa Lex 2nd. champion; E. P.
