HOW A D.C.M. WAS WON
Sir, —I noticed in your Saturday’s issue an account by an anonymous writer, ot an occasion when Mr. Coates “went over the top” during the Great M ar. Perhaps the following, taken from the history of “The Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.b., 1914-1919,” which describes how Mr. Lee, the Labour member for Auckland East, gained his D.C.M. may interest some of your readers. The extract is taken from page lbo, and reads: “There were many acts ot courage by the men of Hawke’s Bay; but one notable feat of fearless gallantry was on the part of Private J. A. Lee. He tackled, single-handed, a machine-gun near the Wytsehaete Road, and captured the four gunners. Later, when Taranaki Company was checked by an enemy post, Lee, with two of his companions, worked round behind tlie enemy, and rushed the post, capturing two machine guns, and forty men, and so enabled our advance to proceed. —I am, etc., w.G.C. October 27.
