Walking shoes, which have to receive fresh coats of gold or silver -paint every day, are popular among wealthy women of the Parisian “smart set.” Recent visitors to Mason’s Bay, Stewart Island, report that some time during the past three weeks the locality had been inundated by a tidal wave or a series of them (reports the “Southland Times”). Heavy logs which had lain on the beach for 20 years or more had been washed up about 30 feet above high-water mark, and in many cases carried up small creeks to a greater distance. The seas had swept over the sand banks and changed the appearance of the beach. In one instance a small piece of ambergris, fresh from the sea, was picked up on top of a sandhill 30 feet above high-water mark.
