MENTAL DEFECTIVES

BRITISH BILL EMPOWERING STERILISATION “ONLY CURE FOR SERIOUS EVIL” (United Service.) London, October 26. It is understood that the Eugenics Society has drafted for presentation to Parliament a Bill empowering the sterilisation of mental defectives at the instance of the local authority under the Mental Deficiency Act, subject to the approval of the Minister of Health, the Board of Control of Defectives, and the parent. Tlie last-named is dispensable where the defective is legally certified to by a doctor. Sir William Arbuthnot Lane, the well-known doctor, declares that almost the entire medical profession and a majority of thinking people support the Bill, as sterilisation is the only cure for a serious evil. A continuance of -the families of mental defectives is utterly unjustifiable.
