WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL Carterton, October 28. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at Carterton on Saturday, Councillor T. V. Moore presiding. The chairman extended a welcome to Councillor F. Court, who has just returned from a visit to the Old Country. The financial statement disclosed a credit to date of £10,157 16s. 9d„ of which £B5OO was fixed deposit. Receipts for the month were £435 ss. 2d. Accounts amounting to £1496 Us. 4d. were passed for payment. . It was decided that loans be raised for the Craigie Lea and Tupurupuru Roads, and that tenders be called for metalling. A petition was received from ' the' users of Jervois Road asking that a creek be covered in, and it was decided that the overseer prepare an estimate and a recommendation on the class of culvert to be put in. The ranger reported having dealt with 21 head of stock during the month. The water race overseers reported op maintenance work.

It was decided that £6O be expended on Rocky Hill Road. Authority was received to proceed with the pile driving at the Kokotau Bridge, and it was decided that the engineer visit the locality during the coming week and lay out the work. Mr. F. Norris, for the Mount Holdsworth Club, wrote in reference to repairing the road leading to Mount Holdsworth, and it was decided that he be asked to visit the office and confer over the matter.

With regard to the suggestion by Mr. J. Lukie for the council to take over the road through Tnumata Island, it was decided to ascertain the legal position. The Department of Health notified that during the absence of Inspector W. A. McGregor on his annual leave. Inspector Russell would attend to urgent work.

It was decided that the overseer inspect a dangerous corner at Ahiaruhe and one near Palmer’s, on the Carter-ton-Longbusb Road, and prepare an estimate of tile cost of improving them. The overseer reported that the. filling of the Approaches to the bridges in Victoria Rond had heen completed. The washout nt the Maungntnrere Brylge on Brooklyn Road had been repaired and n groyne put in above the bridge. On Tea Creek Road repairs had been effected to the suspension bridge, and patch metalling on Norfolk Road, nnd a pipe culvert put'in on Mount Holdsworth Road. A pipe culvert had been put in on Hughes Road and on Moreton Road. Grading and general maintenance work had been carried out on the Manngar.nki Riding. A start had been made with the quarrying of metal on Flatpoint Road. The formation of the road into the metal nit on Crngie Len Road had been completed. A groyne had been i-onaired nnd willows planted nt the White Bridge on Belvedere. Rond.. Tlie filling nnd widening of thia portion of highwnv is nearly completed ns far as Tidy’s Hill, and the regrading of the hill is in hiind.
