LECTURE ON MUSIC

Wanganui, October 26. Music teachers and diploma candidates of Wanganui were entertained on Thursday evening to a very instructive and interesting lecture by Mr. Egerton Lowe, who is at present conducting examinations in New Zealand on' behalf of the Trinity College of Music, London. The lecture was given at the Lady Jeiiicoe Club rooms. Mr. Lowe spoke on many points, including touch, in which he showed how necessary it was to pay just as much attention to the release of a key as to the depression. He said it was just as important to begin phrases beautifully as to end phrases beautifully. He also dealt with the correct action of the thumb, and said it should be trained to rise from its base. Mr. Lowe gave several illustrations at the piano to make his meaning clear, and showed how a perfect crescendo could be obtained by more muscular exertion. A txt he conclusion of the lecture, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Lowe.
