CATHEDRAL ON FIRE
FAMOUS BUILDING AT .TOURNAI (Australian Press Association.) Brussels, October 25. The famous Romanesque Cathedral of Tournai is on fire. It Contains pictures b.V Rubens and Jordaens. Apparently the outbreak was due to the carelessness of workmen restoring the roof, which is now fully ablaze. The damage is enormous, and it is feared that the stone vaulting may collapse into the nave of the church. The cathedral is often considered the choicest architectural treasure of Belgium owing to its five graceful towers, which it was feared would collapse. It is now hoped that this danger has been passed. A rainstorm helped the firemen to extinguish the fire. (Australian Press association.) (Rec. October 26, 11.5 p.m.) Paris, October 26. The Tournai Catlftdral was saved, although considerably damaged. Troops helped the clergy to remove the treasures.
