MOTORISTS’ ENORMOUS ORGANISATION
The English Automobile Association, or the “A.A.” as it is generally called, is easily the largest in the world. The membership now totals 378,846, while entrance fees and subscriptions last year reached the huge total of £689,520. This organisation accomplishes an immense amount of good work for the benefit of motorists and anyone who has travelled on roads throughout Great Britain keenly appreciates and marvels at the I wonderful system of patrol work and service extended to road users. The United States Department of Commerce has issued specifications, of an automobile ship of the desert which has been designed by a German engineer. The desert liner is said to be quite practicable. It is 12aft. long, 25ft. wide, and 45ft. high, mounted on wheels nearly 40ft. in diameter. It is shaped like a ship and designed to travel at 16 m.p.h. and climb grades up to 1 in 3. Compensation devices would keep the mammoth body at a comfortable angle on undulating desert surface. Two motors of 450 h.p. each would be required, and hydraulic steering would be employed. The capacity of the ship planned is 150 persons, with storage for 200 tons of cargo. Experts consider that a machine of this type would solve many problems in desert transport
