POLICE AID TO BE INVOKED

Sacks of putrid fish and other decomposed matter are being thrown over the I’ipe Bridge at the rear of the Hutt Trotting Club’s grandstand into the Waiwetu Stream, according to statements made at a meeting of the Hutt River Board last night. So bad was the stench in the vicinity of the bridge on . a recent evening that the Mayor of Lower Hutt and chairman of the board (Mr. W. T. Strand) was “attracted” to the scene when out for a stroll just before dusk. “It is most disgusting,” said Mr. Strand at last night’s board meeting, “the dumping that is being done. I have taken the liberty of asking the Town Clerk of Lower Hutt to offer a reward to anyone giving information as to who deposited the offal.” Mr. Strand mentioned that shingle contractors were endeavouring to obtain shingle free from shell from below the bridge, but the deposits made it extremely difficult. The clerk read a letter he had received on the subject from McArthur Bros. Ltd., suppliers of washed river sand and graded crude gravel. “We are considerably inconvenienced,” wrote the company, "through large quantities of oyster shells being dumped over the side of the pipe bridge. These shells are carried down by the current and our dredge picks them up, and it is necessary for us to employ labour in picking them out of the gravel. We should be glad to know if your board can take steps to stop this practice.” The board decided to invoke the aid of the Lower Hutt and Petone police, and also that of the Health Department, with a view to putting nn end to The consent of the Local Bodies’ Loans Board to the raising of the following loans was gazetted last night, T Johnsonville Town Board: Streets Improvement Supplementary Loan, IJ-8, £530 on the instalment system, extending over a period of 30 years ; repayable, with interest, by instillments over a similar 11 Waipukurau Borough Council: Footpaths’Loan of £14.405; £4OOO to be raised on the instalment system over a period of 33 years; interest 6 per cent. Kairanga County Council: Taonui Rid ing Road Improvements Loan, for widening remetalling and surfacing with t-ir and asphalt the Foxton Line and Rangitikei Line; £5000; term 15 years; interest of per cent.; sinking fund, 4 5-8 per cent.
