THE RACING WORLD

MEETINGS AT AUCKLAND, CARTERTON, AND

KUROW

UNPRECEDENTED SCENES AT ELLERSLIE There was a sensational occurrence at the Ellerslie racecourse on Saturday after the Mitchelson Cup race, which itself was a fiasco. The crowd became so unruly that the remainder of the programme had to be postponed. The Cup was won by Laughing Prince with Desert Glow second. The Great Northern Guineas went to Prodice. At the Carterton Club’s meeting the Wairarapa County Cup was won by Horomea from Teri, while at Kurow the Cup went to 1 horndale, Lucy Locket being second.

AUCKLAND MEETING LAUGHING PRINCE WINS CUP GUINEAS TO PRODICE ■By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.” Auckland, October 6. Unprecedented scenes marked the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club s spring meeting at Ellerslie, to-day, and as a result of a hostile demonstration after the principal race, the Mitchelson Clip, in which half the field got left at the. post, it was found possible to run only one other event, leaving three races to be run. It,was decided to hold them on Monday, commencing at 2 p.m., and to hold the second day on Tuesday. So far as the programme went, it was held under ideal conditions, and on a fast track. Prodice won the Great Northern Guineas comfortably from Toxeuma and Cashier, and with seven of the fourteen starters in the Mitchelson Cup going away, Laughing Prince won from Desert Glow and Mask. The Shorts Handicap saw a brilliant sprint on the part of Oration, who got home ahead of Paganelli and Benzora The disorderly scenes on the course are ’dealt with in another column. TRIAL HURDLES. Siaosi, ridden a judicious race in front by Bowden, scored very nicely from the favourite, Potoanui, in the hurdles. Siaosi, apart from pecking on landing at the 6-furlongs post, gave a finished display of fast, clean jumping, and he settled anything that attempted to fence with him. Potoanui was always going nicely, but found the winner just too good. Piet made a bold display half a mile from home, and he then attempted to take on Siaosi, and, making a faulty jump, lost, ground. TTp came on again into a good third and may do well at. the game. He was paying a very long price, linopono, who finished fourth, made a bad jump at the six furlongs and lost ground. Kawini was always well back. He made up a lot of ground in the concluding stages, and was not far away in. nfth place. Farndon lost his rider. GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS. There was a good deal of interference in the running of the Guineas, but the winner, Prodice, scored very decisively, coming from the middle of the field. Cashier was first out but soon got knocked back, Toxeuma showing out from Avoncourt and Episode. Running up the hill to the five furlongs, White Wings and Gold Money shot up to the leaders, and Toxeuma lost ground, while a little further on Episode was nearly down. Just before turning for the stretch Toxeuma pushed up on the rails and was on terms with White Wings and Gold Money as they came into line, the bunch being then headed by Produce. When well in the straight Prodice came away and scored very decisively, by nearly a length from Toxeuma, who was a length in front of Cashier. Episode and Staghunter were handy next, followed by White Wings, Mithra,-and Sir Russell. The unluckiest runner was Cashier, for in addition to his initial bump he got interfered with later. He may not have won, for Prodice got home very decisively, but he would have made a much keener contest of it. Toxeuma, bar a bit. of interference running to the half mile, got a great run on the rails all the way and had every chance. Episode was another unlucky runner, and possibly would also have been in an interesting, finish without her mishap. At the same time she does not look right yet. Staghunter was holding a fair position for a little over two furlongs, but running to the five-furlong post there was a patch of soft ground and he lost his place here. He came on again well in the run home. White Wings had every chance and failed to see it out, and none of the others had any chance. Mithra was off the course at the turn, but she was never prominent. ’ ~ SHORTS HANDICAP. There was a rare surprise in the open sprint when Oration came home, for he carried little money. Nevertheless he won on his merits and gave nothing a chance, while he also ran the distance out to the bitter end.. Itwas a glimpse of his two-year-old form which promised better thangs than he afterwards accomplished. Commendation, who went out at a long price, played up at the barrier, refusing to free the tapes, and after- some delay he swung right round as they lifted and took -no part in the race. In fact, his rider, L. G. Morris, found it useless to give chase to the field. Ballymoy and Aussie were first out, but Aussie soon lost his place and Ballymoy ran up to the .five furlongs, being there passed by Oration and Paganelli. Oration showed a great burst of speed and led from Paganelli at the half, followed by Freehold, Lady’s Boy, Kaiti and Benzora, who were running in close order. Aussie here began to move up again, but got knocked back once more. Oration and Paganelli led into the straight from Lady’s Boy, Benzpra, Lysander nnd Kaiti. The leaders were all out in the run home, but nothing could catch Oration, who beat Paganelli by a length, with Benzora just over a length away third. There was a gap of- four lengths to Prince Otto, who was followed by Lysander, Kaiti and Lady’s Boy. Oration fairly outpaced the field, and he paid a handsome dividend. Paganelli ran well, showing all his pace, but Oration’s advantage of 201 b. was too big a hurdle. Benzora also ran well., but had every chance to do better. Prince Otto finished well. Ibut over a beaten lot, in which Lysander ran his best race for a long time. MITCHELSON CUP. The big handicap turned out one of the most disastrous events in the history of the club. The - incidents which led up to the great demonstration which eventually led to the postponement of the racing, are described elsewhere. Suffice it to here write of the actual running. The betting was spirited, Laughing Prince,

Mask, Star Stranger, and Desert Glow all carrying over four figures. At the start only seven horses went away, the other seven pulling up, under the impression that the start was a false one. Those who did not go are Star Stranger, Te Kara, Valkon, Catkin, Mint Leaf, Tidal, and Sir Archie. Transformer went into the lead from Papatu, Desert Glow, Laughing Prince, Mask, Royal Mint, and Queen Arch. In the straight, half-hearted attempts by some of the riders to pull up were made, as they did not appear to be sure of the position. However, they kept going, and the order was much the same until the back stretch, where Queen Arch moved up to fourth place. Transformer and Papatu dropped out on the turn. Desert Glow leading into the straight from Laughing Prince, Papatu, Transformer, and Mask. Laughing Prince came on to win by a length from Desert Glow, who was two lengths in front of Mask. Then came R° yal Mint, Papatu, Queen Arch, and TransfOr Laughing Prince, who shared the honours with IStar Stranger as looking the best-conditioned horse in the held, won well. He ran out the distance all right, but it was not a fast-run race. Desert Glow showed a glimpse of the form which was apparently well anticipated, Alask was a trifle disappointing. It is, of course, impossible to conjecture what would have won had they all got away. Laughing Prince must certainly have been hard to beat, but Star Stranger was a very fit horse and solidly supported by his connections. Valkon also looked well. HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE.

After considerable delay the Hunters Steeplechase was started. Master Arch and Archangel fell at the first fence. Tago San then led until he and Roman Abbey fell This-left Clockwork. Marita, Maslioor, and Rafferty well clear. Mashoor went ahead on the next round and soon put a big break on Rafferty, Pompeius and Marita, who were followed by Importer. Rafferty, Pompeius, and Marita fell in a heap at the first fence on the hill, and Importer fell over them. This left Mashoor with a commanding lead, and he won by 20 lengths from Cui Bono, who was 12 lengths ahead of Clockwork. Syndicate was the. only other horse to finish. „ ~ , The jockeys had to ride wildly through the crowd and pass the post, there bein? determined attempts made to stop their progress. Mashoor was the rank outsider of the field and paid a sensational dividend, while the second horse paid double figures. Betting was restricted in this event by the scenes following the fiasco in the Cup. Importer was travelling well when he fell, and might have caught the winner. This was the end of the racing for the day, as it was deemed unsafe to continue, particularly as the next race was for the two-year-olds in the Welcome Stakes. CARTERTON RACES

HOROMEA WINS CUP SPRINTERS BEATEN BY CALLANMORE The Carterton Racing Club was favoured with beautiful weather for its annual race meeting, which was held on Saturday. There was a good attendance and the machine put through £13,393, £245 less than was put through last year. The course was in excellent condition. TRIAL PLATE. Rillet, Roi de Yal, Pari and Tcheha •were the favourites for the Trial Plate. Veronese was first to show out and she was never headed. Others who began fairly well were Bridal Wreath, Rillet, Atholspear, Tcheka, and Water Spear. Veronese led into the straight from Rillet and Waterspear, with Jet Black and Tcheka handy. Veronese stayed on best to win by a length and a half from Rillet, with Jet Black four lengths away third, Tcheka fourth and Waterspear next. Veronese won decisively, but Roi de Vai, who finished well, was unlucky at the barrier. CARRINGTON HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Billion was the best backed of the small field for the Carrington Highweight Handicap, and after lying well back till nearing the home turn he won nicely. Belgian Queen and Otauru Lass piloted Billion and a bunched field into the straight, where Billion drew away and won by a length and a half from Otauru Lass, who was only a neck in front of Belgian Queen, with Hymgreat a good fourth. WAIRARAPA COUNTY CUP. The Wairarapa County Cup was won from end to end by Horomea, who was well backed, though not favourite. All the way round to the straight Horomea was followed by Teri, Pantagruel and Vigilance. Vigilance and Talisker moved up at the home turn, but neither had any chance with Horomea, while Teri also kept them off, Horomea was nearly three lengths to the good at’the finish, and Teri, who was second, was separated by only a neck from Vigilance, with Talisker another neck away fourth. There was no fluke about Horomea’s win, but Vigilance was somewhat unlucky. Teri ran a very creditable race, and Talisker will improve. CARTERTON HACK HANDICAP. Arrow Boy beat the Carterton Hack Handicap field very comfortably. When the field settled down he was in charge from Baskier, with Ramescs, Salt Petrel, Chopin and Grey Mist handy. Arrow Boy had a nice lead turning for home, and he came away slightly in the straight, to win by three lengths from Baskier, who was a short length in front of Chopin, with Grey Mist fourth. BUNNY MEMORIAL HANDICAP. Reduced to four runners, the Bunny Memorial Handicap found High Disdain a hotter favourite than Callanmore. Callanmore obtained the lead half way through the race, and he piloted High Disdain into the straight, eventually winning by two lengths from the favourite, with Decoy Bird four lengths away third. Callanmore was better seasoned than High Disdain, and stayed out the final furlong too well for him. The others had no chance. TARATAHI HACK HANDICAP. The Taratahi Hack Handicap produced a great finish. Gold Bag was a warm favourite, and there was good support for Volplane and Rory Mor, Gold Bag, Rory Mor, Ruakura, and Red Glow were the early leaders. Red Glow took charge before turning for home, where the field was well bunched. Full Mark came on the outer and in a hard set-to, won by a neck from Rotowhero, who was half a head in front of Rory Mor, with Courageous and Gold Bag almost in line. Full Mark won without having any the best of the running, and should do better ,Ct ‘ MAUNGARAKI HANDICAP. The Maungaraki Handicap was a fairly even betting race, and Anolo wound up a £2l better favourite than Royal Game.

Decoy Bird was the first to show out, but Royal Game quickly joined him, and the pair ran together to the straight, where King Midas and Anolo were just behind them. Royal Game finished on strongly, and beat King Midas home by a short length. Decoy Bird was a long head behind King Midas, and Anolo was at the head of the others. ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP.

Banket was backed to a short price in the Electric Hack Handicap. She got to the front in the first furlong, and led from Sky Bird, Miss Gowrie, and The Dove. Wet Winter and Veronese improved their positions on the top bend, and were fairly well placed at the entrance to the straight. Banket was nicely clear when the field turned for home, and though Veronese finished strongly, the favourite had an advantage of a length and a half at the winning post. Wet Winter was a poor third, and Miss Gowrie fourth. Banket was too good at the distance, but Veronese was going very strongly at the finish.
