NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE
EFFECT TO RECOMMENDATIONS
PRIME MINISTER’S PROMISE
Complete effect will be given by the Government to the recommendations of the National Industrial Conference in regard to the setting up of a committee to consider immigration and unemployment. This assurance was given to a deputation which wailed upon the Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) ami tiie Minister of Labour (Hon. R. A. Wright) yesterday Mr. Coates also told the deputation that legislation dealing with workers' compensation was being prepared. The secretary of the Alliance of Labour (Mr. J. Roberts) said the conference had brought down three unanimous, recommendations in regard to immigration, workers' compensation, and unemployment, and the Labour movement thought the Government could put the. recommendations into operation immediately, particularly in regard to immigration. Restrictions could lie placed on immigration until all the unemployed workers in the country were employed. In regard to unemployment. Mr. Roberts urged that the Government should set up the com mittee which had been recommended by the National Industrial Conference. A scheme of unemployed insurance was urgently needed and he suggested flint the Government should introduce legislation dealing with this mutter during the present session. Dealing with workers' compensation. Mr. Roberts said the conference had asked the Government to make an investigation of the Ontario scheme and other similar schemes. If that investigation were made at once, it mivbt be possible to introduce legislation this season.
Mr. Coates said the questions of nnemnjnyment and immigration were bound up together. Statistical information Imd been collected on the subject. and was still pouring in and this was ready to be dealt with by the committee. lie was not yet in a position to disclose what the statistical information revealed but it could bo disclosed to the committee when it was set up.
