PREMIER IN VIGOROUS MOOD
DESIRE F.OR REFORM A frank and vigorous statement ol.’ his position with reference to (lie amended Licensing Bill was made by the Prime Minister during its third reading in the House this morning. Amid a chorus of “hear, hears” he denounced the statement by a. prominent member of the New Zealand Alliance that it had captured I’hrliamenl, ami said that the statement dial; “unfortunately the Leader was wet” was unfair and a misrepresentation of the true position. Had he been a “wet” he could have side-tracked the Bill last year and again this year. That was not his attitude. He had a genuine desire to bring about reforms in the licensing laws, and he would like to see the Bill go to the Upper House so that the question could be dealt with. He could not vote for the third reading because the Bill differed iu material and important principles from the one he introduced. If he supported it now be would be accused of mating a volte face in the course of a few hours.
