MANAWATU HUNT CLUB MEETING

MOUNTAIN CRAG WINS STEEPLES

CHIEF FLAT RACE TO. LADY DESMOND By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.” Palmerston North, Sept. 19. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Hunt Club was held at Awapuni to-day in boisterous weather. A westerly gale with occasional showers made matters unpleasant at times and the track was soft and slow. Mountain Crag won the Hunt Club Steeplechase comfortably from Hollycombe and Kangi Sarto, and the Kairanga Handicap went to Lady Desmond, last year’s winner, with Kilperon second and Koyal Game third. ~,,,,,, oo The attendance was fair. The totalisator handled £11,182, compared with £11,078 last year, an increase of £lO4. A. McDonald was fined £5 for not riding out Scrapiron m the Parorangi Hunters’ Steeplechase.

RAUMAI HURDLES. Home Made was in the rear in the early stages of the hunters’ hurdle race, the pace being made by American Pillar from Pikimai and Ponjola. Down the back Pantier became prominent, and on the home turn Home Made put in an appearance. Pantier led over the last fence, but Home Made beat him to the post by two lengths, with Pikimai four lengths back. Chrissarto was fourth, followed by Kilia and Padriagh. The event was a good thing for the winner, who staj'ed too well for Pantler. MAIDEN PLATE. The maiden event, though its contestants represented moderate class, provided a great finish, heads separating the first four. Gambler led with Cold Air and Warzone from Satnbur, Warfilie and Broxt. Broxt led with Gambler into the straight from Cold Air, WarHlle, Warzone and Sky Rider. In a punishing finish Cold Air beat Sky Rider by a head, with Gambler a heil'd away ahead in front of Democratic. Gambler, Warfilie and Broxt were close up. But for getting a hampered run turning into the straight Warfilie would have been closed. Sky Rider was unlucky. HUNT CLUB STEEPLES. The Huut Ulub Steeplechase was a simple repetition of Dannevirke form, Mountain Crag, after being prominent throughout, easily beating Hollycombe, who just got home in front of Kaugi Sarto. Mountain Crag behaved himself much belter at his fences than he did at Dannevirke, and over the concluding stages had far too much pace for Hollycombe. The latter jumped perfectly and was given every chance by his rider, W. Bowden. , , , Kangi Sarto jumped the brush fences very poorly and he should at least have been second. None of the others had any chance. Terchu and Trouble flattered for a round and a half, but at the finish were beaten tutu fifth and sixth places, Askari finishing fourth, a long way back. Omahu never flattered and Risk fell. The winner, if all goes well, looks like turning out a useful cross-country horse. AOKAUTERE HANDICAP. The hack sprint was won easily by the favourite Shining Star, after Golden Shadow had led him to the straight. The others were well beaten, the third horse (Disrank) being five lengths away. He ■was having only his second start, and might improve, but the class was very poor. Aurora Borealjs was prominent to the turn and then fell back into fourth place. , . , The winner is in the New Zealand Gup, but is not likely to increase his admirers for that event on account of to-day’s win. KAIRANGxV HANDICAP. Lady Desmond’s superior class carried her through in the Kairanga Handicap, but she was fortunate In getting the best of the start. When settled down Lin Arlington and Kilperon led her to the turn, with Royal Game and Beaumont handy. Moepai momentarily appeared on the turn, but Lin Arlington and Kilperon led Lady Desmond and Royal Game into the straight. Lady Desmond finished best and won by half a length, after being a length clear with fifty yards to go. Royal Game was a neck behind Kilperon, and thou camo Imperial Spark, Lin Arlington, and Beaumont. Lady Desmond pulled up lame, and this Is probably the reason why both Kilperon and Royal Game were overhauling her again at the finish. It does not look as if she will do too well in a New Zealand Oup preparation. PARORANGI STEEPLES. Pikimai made no race of the Hunters’ Steeplechase, outclassing his field in the last five furlongs. Mataipuke was a moderate second, and Hats Off finished over the tiring Scrap Iron for third money. Captain Wai and Birkbeck fell when in the lead after going seven furlongs. Birkbeck was remounted and finished fifth.. KIWITEA HURDLES. Pantagruel scored an unexpected victory in the hack hurdles, but he was always handy to the leaders, and there was no fluke about his win. Lieutenant Bill made all Hie running, but was a beaten horse at the last fence, and Beaumont put in n run from a long way back to beat him for second, while he was also rapidly overhauling the winner. Sunart was backed, but was never dangerous, and Rouen was always struggling. Novar shaped best of the beaten lot. Olympic looked likely for a Jong way, but there was no sting left in him over the last half. FLAXBOURNE HANDICAP. Shining Star, saddled up again for the concluding event with a 61b. penalty, was again equal to winning, but neither Boy nor Tanagra, who ran him close, were too lucky. Tanagra came from a long way back, and it looked as if lie should have won. Elysianor was always prominent, and was a fair fourth, but Grand National was, well beaten. Sky Rider ran a fair race. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Sydney, September 19. As the result of the alleged ringing-in of tlie marc Supremacy, the winner at Victorian meetings, in the Maiden Handicap at Victoria Park as Malster Jolly, which won in the second division, the mare and her owner, H. Hutchinson, were disqualillml for life. The mare disappeared subsequently from the stable of the trainer, W. E. Crockett, at South Itaudwick. According to a Press Association message from Sydney, the four thousand guinea horse Karuma, a very prominent Epsom candidate, lias developed a cracked heel and is an unlikely starter. I’oporan, a son of a marc which did better service in a buggy than on the race track, secured a lucky run along the rails in the Novice at Menanglc early this month, and landed one of the. biggest plunges of the afternoon by a narrow margin (says n Sydney writer). At his first start after Ills arrival from Hie country. I’oporan won a Corinthian at Menanglc, but at bls next appearance, which was on flic same track, lie failed to fill a place, although sent out favourite. Mr. C. Longworth, owner, was satisfied Unit Hie gelding's showing on Hie occasion of his failure did not represent true form, and planned a plunge which was responsible for I’oporan firming iu the market. To secure Hie excellent price which was on offer curly, T. Webster, a Now Zealand apprentice, was substituted for E. Bartle. It proved a happy move, although In the early stages of the race the outlook was not n't all bright for backers of Hie country horse. I’oporan was slow to move, and for a moment it looked as if lie would drop Io near the rear of Hie field. However, he was fifth at Hie halfmile, and an opening on Hie inside assisted him to get up and beat Invicta, an outsider, in the last stride or two.
