COURSE AT BALMACEWAN GETTING READY FOR THE N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP Dominion Special Service. Duuedin, September 18. The New Zealand golf championship tournament is duo to commence on the Balmacewan links, Dunedin, on October 12, aud owing to the recent spell of dry weather, the course up to about a week ago had been far from its best. The greens were cracking badly, and some golfers from Wellington who recently played on the course, were astounded at the parched appearance of the greens. As a result of the cracking, the Otago Club’s professional (A. J. Milliner) last week laid down some topdressing, and the greens were “rested” so as to be in order for championship play. During the past few days, however, good soaking rains have had a most beneficial effect, and a desperate situation has been averted. Indeed, so marked has been the improvement that Mr. George Smith, secretary of the Otago Golf Club, to-day expressed the opinion that there was no reason why the course should not be at its best for the championship meeting. “A number of extra men have been working at balmacewan lately,” he stated, “and the principal operations have been the puttie" in of new bunkers and the remodelling of old bunkers. The hill in front of the tee at the twelfth hole has been cut down so as to give players on the tee a good view of the fairway. New tees have also been set up.” Already advice has been received that Carnegie Clark (Sydney), a well-known Australian professional, is likely to be present. Accommodation at the Otago Golf Club’s clubhouse will be fully taxed when the championships commence, but alterations are in progress, and so far as accommodation for the competitors is concerned, there should be no cause for complaint. The championship meeting will extend from October 12 to October 20. ENGLISH WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. (United Service.) London, September 17.
