PARTIAL RESUMPTION
ON AUSTRALIAN WATERFRONTS SOME PORTS IDLE STILL SHIPOWNERS STAND FIRM The waterside workers at • some Australian ports yesterday refusefl to obey the order of the Melbourne conference to resume, declaring they would not recognise the new award. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Rec. September 17, 8.5 p.m.) Sydney, September 17. Although the waterside workers’ conference at Melbourne on Saturday decided that the men should return to work, the men at Newcastle, Brisbane, and Port Kembla refused to resume, stating that they would not recognise the Beeby award. The wharf labourers at Fremantle also repudiated file Beeby award, ignoring the instructions from the federation to resume work. The shipowners met to-day to discuss the position, and decided that work must be resumed at all ports before the conference which the men asked for would be granted. As a result of the dislocation of the oversea transport facilities the wool sales, which should have commenced to-day, have been postponed indefinitely. (Rec. September 17, 10.25 p.m.) Hobart, September 17. The watersiders resumed on the terms of the new award.
