PALMERSTON TO WANGANUI Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, September 9. . Under the auspices of the Wanganui Amateur Road Cycling Club the first 1“'merston North to Wanganui cycle lace took place yesterday the distance being miles The road was in bad condition most of the way, and the riders had a head wind, or rather gale, all the way. Ten finished. The winner, D. Toomer, of Wellington, put up the fastest time (3hr. Umin. 32sec.). W. Colhn %° f merston North, second man, made third fastest time (3hr. 17min. 20sec.), and L. Manning (Wellington), third, was second fastest (3hr. 14min. 7sec.). A large crowd gathered at the finis > just opposite the town bridge, on the layiorville side, the winner being giveni a rousing reception. The race common at Palmerston North shortly after noon, and the first man arrived at Wanganui at 3.37 p.m. After the race the 00-guinea cup and other trophies were presented liy Mr. J. Valentine in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers). The race resulted as follows: — D. Toomer (Wellington), 4min., time 3hr. Umin. W. Collins (Palmerston North), 10 min., time 3hr. 17min. 20sec. .. - L. Manning (Wellington), 4min., time 3hr. 14min. “ L. Frost (New Plymouth), 20min., time 3hr. 42min. 54sec D. Couchman (Dannevirke), 20min., time 3hr. 53min. 30sec » Collins and Manning put np a great finish for second place, Collins winning by about 50 yards. The first man to pass through Sandon was S. K. Forsyth, of Wellington (20 min.), at 1.15 p.m., followed by W. Pedley (Palmerston North), 18min., and L. Frost (New Plymouth), 20min. One and three-quarter minutes after these men followed G. Ingram (Hawera), ISmin., Sowerby (Feilding), 20min., and E. Pederson, 12min. Three and a half minutes after the first group went through followed R'. Springer (Wanganui), 12min., C. Crichton (Wellington), 12min., L. Moorhouse (Wellington). 12min., D. C. Ppderson (Palmerston North). 14inin. Five and a half minutes after the first man were W. Collins (Palmerston North), lOmin., W. Stenning (Hawera), 10mm. Seven and a half minutes after the nrst were W. J. Drieberg (Wellington), 18 min., F. Erskine (Wanganui), 28min., and A. Hall (Wellington), Umin. Eight and a half minutes elapsed after Forsyth had gone through before the following passed through Sandon: O. Prouse (Palmerston North), ISmin.; D. Adamson (Wanganui), 4min., D. Toomer (Wellington), 4min., C. Gurr (Wanganui), 4min., L. Manning (Wellington), 4mm, and F. Bray, IJmin., were the next to arrive on the scene, Hi minutes after the first men had gone through. At 2.40 p.m. Collins led the way into Turakina, followed by Griffin and Couchman. Two minutes later Adamson, Toomer, and Manning passed through.
