‘•Christchurch is supposed to be an English-looking town, but for the life of mo I cannot see the resemblance, said the Mayor, Mr. J. K. Archer, in tiie course of his address under the auspices of the Workers’ Educational Association at Christchurch the other day (says an exchange). Mr. Archer added that he knew that was a very disloyal tiling for the Mayor to say, but he really could not see any difference, except in size and lay-out, between, say, Christchurch and Auckland, and Christchurch ami Wellington. There was, of course, be added, a great difference between Christchurch and Dunedin, as Christchurch hiul not got Dunedin s "barbarian language.” (Laughter.) Dunedin started making money in the early days and was making it still, and was keeping it still Dunedin was the richest city in the Dominion, and it was rich because it was Scottish. The founders of Christchurch intended that the city should bo exclusively English, and he thought it was a very wise thing that that intention was not carried out. incy were all the better, he considered, for living in a cosmopolitan community.
