Sir Walter Stringer, accompanied by Lady Stringer, left for Christchurch last night. Included in the passengers by the Ruahine, which is at present on its way to New Zealand, is the Earl of Orford. He is accompanied by the Countess of Orford. The Earl has been in indifferent health, and he intends spending a long holiday in the Dominion. Judge AlcCormac-k, of the Native Land Court, arrived in Wellington yesterday from the north. Dr. E. G. Lynch, F.R.C.S. (Edin.), at present on the staff of the Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton, England, has been appointed surgical resident registrar, Wellington Hospital. He is the son of Mr. J. D. Lynch, of Greymouth.

■ Mr. C. W. Kerry, who has been adjudicating at the Auckland competitions, lias returned to Wellington. Air. J. F. Alontague, a well-known competitions adjudicator, arrived yesterday from the south, and left in the evening by the Limited express for Auckland.

The Rev. Father Bourke left for the south by the Wahine last night. Alessrs. J. Bitehener, E. P. Lee, T. D. Burnett, T. E. Y. Seddon, and H. Armstrong, Al.P.’s, and the Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., left for the south last night by the Wahine. Captain Chudley, Alarine Superintendent of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, left for Lyttelton last night.

Air. F. B. Anyon was yesterday admitted as-a barrister of the Supreme Court by Air. Justice Smith, on the motion of Air. Al. F. Luckie.

The Rev. Jasper Calder and Air. A. J. Stratford, of Auckland, are in Wellington to attend a meeting of the Howard Penal Reform League. The funeral service for Dr. William Gray Dixon, held in First Church, Dunedin, on Wednesday afternoon, was very largely attended by members of the Dunedin Presbytery, clergymen of other denominations and the general public. The Rev. G. Aliller (Aloderator) presided.

Dr. H. R. Hemmen, a member of the ' German Foreign Office staff, arrived in Auckland on Tuesday, to begin a short tour of the North Island. He is accompanied by Airs. Hemmen. An Australian Press AssociationUnited Service message from London states that Air. Logan has resigned the chairmanship of the National Alortgage Agency of New Zealand. Viscount Hampden succeeds and will shortly visit New Zealand on the company’s business. ■■

Air. F. M. B. Fisher, at one time Minister of Trade and Customs in the late Air. Alassey’s Cabinet, 1912 to 1915, is to be married to-day in England. Air. Fisher is a director of the Imperial Commercial Association, and although 51 years old still takes a prominent part in big tennis in Great Britain. He was previously married to a New Zealand lady, but is divorced. The death is announced by a Press Association message from Sydney of Mr. William Lambert, member of the Federal Parliament for West Sydney. Mr. Lambert was recently the central figure and • originator of a bribery charge involving politicians. Air. Lambert died suddenly at a private hospital. Having completed forty years’ service with the Postal Department, Mr. F. W. Peulington, Chief Postmaster of Dunedin since 1925, was yesterday afternoon met on the day of his retirement on superannuation, by about 100 members of the service and representatives of the Telegraph Department and presented with a solid gold watch as a token of their esteem. Presentations were also macle to Airs. Penllngton and Miss A. Penlington. Air. Penlington, who joined the department at Akaroa, in 1889, served in Christchurch. Timaru, Wellington, Napier, Auckland, and Dunedin. —Dominion Special Service.

A highly-esteemed resident of Auckland, Dr. J. Giles, attained the ninetysixth anniversary of his birth on Alonday. He was born at Frorne, Somerset. England, and has had a most varied career, including the following:—Aledical practitioner, army' surgeon, pioneer settler, farmer, gold digger, magistrate, mining warden, newspaper editor, departmental under-secretary, and a member of thirteen Royal Commissions. He enlisted for the war in the Crimea, but was detailed for service at the base camp at Scutari, where he formed a close personal friendship with Florence Nightingale. Dr. Giles came to New Zealand in 1858, and settled at Mauku. Later he was in the rush to Gabriel’s Gully, and afterwards was editor of the “New Zealander” at Auckland. Subsequently Dr. Giles was appointed a magistrate, and presided at the Court in Auckland for some years prior to his retirement in 1893.
