SOLD BY WIRELESS
USING THE OCEAN STATIONS Many are the uses of modern wireless. This was proved last week by a Wellington land, and estate agent, who had been asked to dispose of a Northland residential property by a gentleman who had betaken himself to Pitcairn Island (of all places) for a holiday. With much industry the agent had been endeavouring for months to dispose of this property without success, alt’-kugh it was quite good buying, and when at last an offer that looked like business was received from a man In search of a good home, the owner had departed for this lone dot in the Pacific, and as he had left no power of attorney, and no elasticity as to terms, it was necessary to get iiis consent before tlie deal could be concluded. Pitcairn Island was not on the wireless list of communicable stations, so the agent had to write to the owner conveying particulars of the offer, and asking him tojeply by wireless through tlie medium of any steamers that might call. A month went past, and then out of the blue came the instruction to sell at the offer made. The message had been originally sent out from the steamer City of Batavia, the Coptic picked it up and sent it on to the Rotorua, tlie wireless officer of which vessel broadcast the message, which was picked up at Auckland, and sent ou to Wellington. The story, which is absolutely authentic, is interesting in view of tlie cabled report that a wireless plant is to be set up at Pitcairn Island, making another valuable link in the chain of island stations across tlie Pacific.
