While working at the Patent Slip yesterday afternoon, John Abernethy, a shipwright, who resides at Fairnham Street, caught his right hand in a circular saw. He received a severe lacerated wound on the first finger and was taken by the Free Ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

The Royal Agricultural Society lias been informed by the Railway Department that in view of the large attendance probable at the forthcoming Royal Show at Palmerston North it has been decided to issue excursion tickets from all stations in both islands. Until last year the concession was only granted in one island.

Exception was taken by some of those present at the meeting of the Maorilanders’ Association on Thursday night to a proposal by the chairman (Mr. W. J. Ford) that Mr. M. Hyland be appointed canvasserorganiser, with a commission of 25 per cent, on all money collected by him in membership fees. As the membership fee is ss. for an adult and 2s. for anyone under the age of 21, this commission would be considerable in the event of a large membership, and dissatisfied sections of the meeting intimated that positions as assistant collectors would not need to go begging. In view of the dissent it was decided to refer the matter to the management committee with power to act.

Bro. J. L. Stewart, N.G., presided over the quarterly summoned meeting of Loyal Britannia Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., held at Clyde Quay on Monday last. Word was received with regret of the resignation of Dr. Josephs, lodge medical officer, who is leaving New Zealand. Dr. Bull was appointed in his stead. The trustees handed in their dispensary report, which was received and discussed, and the matter of the annual Christmas tree was held over in the meantime. Challenges were received for the billiard and card tournaments. During the Initiation service P.G.’s Bros. Kennedy and A. J. Williams acted as conductors. * The Loyal Rose of .Sharon Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., held its fortnightly meeting at the lodge ropm, Trentham, on Wednesday, Bro. C. Boult, N.G., presiding over a good attendance. A letter of condolence was forwarded to the relatives of the late Bro. Brown, who was the oldest member of the lodge, and as a mark of respect the lodge stood in silence for a minute. One candidate was initiated. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Kitchen who, while away from the district, keeps the lodge supplied with notes from meetings held at Pahiatua Lodge. Bro. Ridgway provided entertainment with a gramophone and records. The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Sister Wallis Lodge, • Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., was held recently. Sister Parnell, N.G., presiding over a good attendance. One candidate was initiated into the lodge and order. Two letters of recommendation were granted Sisters Trevermore and Peterson. Favourable reports were received from sick visitors, and small accounts were passed for payment. The resignations of Sisters E. McFarlane and E. Tobin, delegates for the Dispensary Board and Medical Institute Board, were accepted. Bro. Jorgenson was elected delegate for the Dispensary Board, and it was resolved that the election of a delegate for the Medical Institute be held over until next lodge meeting. Lodge honours were accorded a visiting sister and brother, /kt the close of- the meeting a good representation of sisters went along to Loyal Antipodean Lodge, it being the occasion of the combined visitation to that lodge.

Just before seven o’clock last night Donald McCan, aged 12, who resides at 28 Frederick Street, was knocked down by a taxi-cab opposite the Grand Opera House. He was attended to by the Free Ambulance, and taken to the hospital suffering from injuries to the right foot and the right ankle, ami from shock and slight concussion.

A notice received from the office of Mr. E. P. Bunny, solicitor to the Lower Hutt Borough Council, states that by inadvertence judgment was obtained iu the Lower Hutt Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday' in the case of the Lower Hutt Borough Council v. S. L. Gilmer. The amount of the judgment had previously been paid.

The concert given to seafarers on Thursday at the Sailors’ Friend Society by Miss’ W. Cooley was very thoroughly enjoyed. Light refreshments added to the touch of welcome. The performers were the Misses W. Cooley and L. Sturrock, and Messrs. C. G. Chambers, Matthews, H. Iliingsworth, Stratmore, D’Arcy, Walsh. Miss W. Cooley was at the piano. Gifts for the competitors came from Marton, and were won after much effort by men from tho ships in port.

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Newtown Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., was held last Monday, when Bro. Johns, N.G., presided over a good attendance. Bro. Couper, Sec. Past Grands Lodge, attended and urged brethren to keep the combined visit to Loyal Combination in mind for September 25. One new candidate was proposed for membership.
