Oughton then got possession, made a fine run, passed to Dick, who was robbed by Nicholson. From a lineout Donnelly secured, eluded two Maroons, passed to Fountain, who scored in a good position. Nicholson, with a neat kick, converted. Otago 5 Southland 3 An attack by the visitors a moment later was broken, Geddes making a breakaway, but' the Dark Blues returned. Bell kicked across the twenty-five, but Webb picked up and crossed at the corner as he was tackled by Diack. The kick failed. Otago 8 Southland 3 - Otago kept up the offensive, but Bell secured, passed to Geddes, who made u fine run before being tackled. Houghton set oft with the ball, but was robbed. McEwan then obtained possession, passed to Geddes, who nearly scored. Play was in dangerous territory for Otago, but Nicholson cleared. Play then centred at the half-way mark. Here Bell got possession, passed to McAuliffe, thence to Geddes, who ran out. Play was now very fast. The ball landed near Roberts; he passed to McEwan, who was collared when within an ace of scoring. A determined rush by Otago followed, More showing up prominently, but a few moments later half-time sounded with no further addition to the score. Otago S .Southland 3 On the resumption of play .Johnson whipped up the ball, and ran, losing the ball, to recover it again; he was robbed again, but Bell obtained possession, passto Johnson, thence to Geddes, who could not pick the ball up. The Otago backs fumbled, and Johnson got across the line, scoring in a handy position just three minutes after play had recommenced. Diack converted. Otago \.. 8 Southland 8 In retaliation Otago attacked vigorously, and Nicholson got possession, passing to Stewart, who scored a splendid try. The kick failed. Otago 11 Southland 8 Johnson then snapped up the ball, and set off, and passed to Diack, who was run out. A sortie was made on the Dark Blues’ goal, Diack figuring prominently, but Otago forced in the nick of time. From a line-out at the half-way Mark Bell obtained the ball, and initiated a Maroon passing movement, which was broken. The Maroons were then penalised, and Nicholson, with a good kick, just missed. Fast play followed Johnson passing to Geddes, who ran u considerable distance before being brought down. The Maroons were not to be denied, however, and McEwan and McAuliffe figured prominently in a rush, which resulted.in Otago being penalised, and Diack making full use of an easy kick. just, missed. From a line-out Geddes secured the ball, and carried play into Otago’s territory. After u series of lineouts nnd scrums, Southland became too dangerous, and Otago was obliged to force. Another Maroon passing rush caused Otago to force again, but a minute later Bell secured from a scrum, and potted a goal, which earned the plaudits of the crowd. Southland D’ Otago H The Maroons kept up the pressure, and Otago were penalised, Diack narrowly missing the kick. The Dark Blues inaugurated a series of attacks on the Maroon goal, Webb putting jn a fine run, but was robbed. A tine passing movement by the Otago backs saw .Stewart, dribble over the line, but Barnett forced in time. A feature of the game at this stage was the splendid defence of the home team. Otago attacked stoutly: Webb reeeived from a passing movement, but went out near Hie Maroon corner. A few secondsg later Webb was almost across again, but Southland cleared well, and the final whistle sounded a moment later with uo further addition to the score. Southland !•’> Otagoll Mr. E.
