Cabled news has been received by (he Union Company that the Wairuna, from Pacific Coast ports, left Papeete on Tuesday for Auckland, Napier, Lyttelton, Dunedin and New Plymouth. She is due at Auckland on September 14. MAUNGANUI LEAVES SAN FRANCISCO. The Union Company advise that the Maunganui left San Francisco yesterday for Papeete, Rarotonga, Wellington and Sydney. She is due here on September 24. KAURI SOLD TO EASTERN BUYERS. The Union Company announces that it has sold its well-known collier Kauri, at present lying at Lyttelton, to Eastern buyers. The Kauri (originally named the Harmony) is a vessel of 2833 tons, and was built by Messrs. Furness, Withy and Cbmpany, of West Hartlepool, in 1905. She was purchased In England by the Union Steam Ship Company in 1912, renamed Kauri, and arrived in Melbourne from Avonmouth on August 25 that year. The vessel has traded for many years in the Intercolonial coal and timber trades, ami is well known in these waters. It is understood that the Kauri will be owned by Chinese. DEVELOPING ST. LAWRENCE WATER. WAY. The approaching completion of the Welland Ship Canal, between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, has brought into prominence tlie necessity of selecting a port at the Junction of the St. Lawrence River and canals with the eastern end of Lake Ontario, at which elevators and harbour facilities could be provided to permit of the transfer of freight from lake vessels to the smaller craft capable of negotiating the St. Lawrence canals lending to Montreal. According to an announcement made in the House of Commons, Ottawa, recently by tlie Minister of Public Works, the Canadian Government Ims now definitely chosen as the new great lakes terminal tiie town of Prescott, Ontario, which is tlie most easterly port above (lie St. Lawrence rapids. Tlie Minister intimated that the decision was contingent upon satisfactory arrangements being made with the United States in the matter of dredging tlie international section of the St. Lawrence River channel. THE REMUERA. The New Zealand Shipping Company s liner, Remuera, arrived at Lyttelton at 7.30 a.m. yesterday from Port Chalmers for further loading.
