BRITAIN AND ITALY
ATMOSPHERE OF SUSPICION IN ROME RESULT OF AGREEMENT WITH FRANCE lUnited Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) ("Times” Cables.) (Rec. September 4, 11.15 p.m.) London, September 4. The Rome correspondent of ."The Times” states that the uneasiness in certain Italian circles regarding the Franco-British naval agreement is reflected in an article in the “Tribuna,” declaring that the fruits of the agreement are already visible in the atmosphere of suspicion and scepticism surrounding the Kellogg Pact, perturbation regarding Albania, and growing doubts relating to the disarmament conference.
Signoretti, in a leader in the "Lavoro D’ltalia” expresses the opinion that the traditional Anglo-Italian friendship has seldom known such coolness since its inauguration in 1860. Be hopes it will be a passing phase, but it is difficult to understand why Britain, which hitherto has realised Italy’s conciHatoriness, is now displaying solidarity with France, which since 1919 has persistently sought to diminish Italian influence. Britain must have fully known that such action was opposed to Italian orientation.
