THE TASMAN FLIGHT
POSTPONED AGAIN LEATHER CONDITIONS STILL UNFAVOURABLE KINGSFORD-SMITH’S INTENTIONS Unfavourable weather reports yesterday caused another postponement of the start of flic Southern Cross on the flfcht across the Tasman Sea. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Sydney, September 3. The latest advices from Richmond indicate that Kingsford-Smith is watching the meteorological reports very carefully, and while at present he has no intention of hopping off today, the arrival of favourable reports and forecasts this afternoon might induce a last-minute reversal of his intention, and the Southern Cross would start for New Zealand. Yesterday, as on Saturday, the aerodrome was visited by many people who hoped to see the start of the memorable adventure, only to be disappointed. (Rec. September 3, 9.15 p.m.) Sydney, September 3. After waiting airday on weather reports Squadron-Leader KingsfordSmith decided that the conditions were such that it was unwise to attempt the flight to-night. With hurricane winds thrashing about the course to be followed by the Southern Cross the latter would be subjected unnecessarily to a severe buffeting, and common-sense dictated a waiting policy. A gale in the neighbourhood of Norfolk Island also made the outlook from the aviators’ viewpoint unsatisfactory. Kingsford-Smith this evening says they will start at 6 to-morrow if the meteorological report is favourable. If not they will wait from day to day, regardless of the moon as they will have daylight for the New Zealand land flying and arrival at Christchurch.
