MYSTERIOUS TRAGEDY
THE PADDINGTON AFFAIR Sydney, September 3. The Paddington tragedy is most mysterious. The woiituu victim, Hilda Miller, aged 24, not 29, was Mrs. Hancock, but had been divorced, and was to have been remarried on the day of her death. The. police interviewed the prospective bridegroom, who is employe;!; at the same hotel as the deceased was. He was unable to assist the police. He was wearing his wedding clothes when the police called, and appeared greatly distressed when informed of the girl’s death. Chapman, although severely wounded with a six-inch cut in the throat, missie" the main artery by a quarter of an inui. told the police that Miller called at the back door of his residence late at night and invited him outside in his pyjamas. He secured a mattress and both lay down in the washhouse. Miller offered him some chocolate. He became drowsy and fell asleep and remembered no more. The po Ice found a damaged razor near the mattress. Chapman’s father states that he saw a strange-man near the house the whole evening before the tragedy. The dead bodies of Hoy Sefton, 34, and ids wife, Amy Sefton, 37, were found by a nine-year-old son in the bedroom, of their home at Murrumbeena. twelve miles from Melbourne. There was no sign of violence. The couple lived most happily. A post-mor-tem is being held. DEATH DUE TO POISONING ( Rec. September 3, 10.55 p.m.) Melbourne, September 3. A post-mortem examination of the bodies of the Seftons revealed that death was due to poisoning.
