TRAPPED BY FLAMES
FAMILY’S NARROW ESCAPE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, September 3. Five occupants of a five-roomed house at Haig Avenue, Mount RoskilL had a narrow escape about 2 o clock this morning, when they were awakened to fid the house enveloped m flames and every avenue of escape apparently cut off. They were: Mr. and Mrs. S. Bradley and their two children, one a girl aged nine years, ana the other a baby of- nine months, and Miss Amy Turner. * . Awakened by the screaming of the baby, Mr. Bradley, finding all the usual means of egress blocked, smashed a door leading on to an enclosed porch in front of the house, and dropping a tin trunk on the ground, lowered the others on to it. He rushed to the public telephone,' but, not having the necessary coin he was unable to operate the machine, and had to wait for a milkman on his way to work, before the Mount Roskill fire brigade could be called out. When the brigade reached the blazing house three rooms and their contents were already destroyed, and before the flames could be’ put out the remaining two rooms and their contents had been extensively damaged. The house, which was owned by Mi. J. Cook, of Dominion Road, was insured with the South British Insurance Co., Ltd., for £7OO, and the contents were covered by a policy for £~au with the Prudential office.
