POWER SERVICES IN THE WAIKATO
SERIOUSLY AFFECTED BY HORAHORA FIRE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, September 3. _ The hydro-electric authorities estimate that the power supply in the district has diminished by from one-third to one-half as the result of the fire at Horahora on Saturday night. Current is now being obtained from Rotorua, Waihi, Tauranga, Penrose, and Auckland. All the available auxiliary plants in the province have been brought into commission, and the power is being pooled for the general good. The dairy industry, which depends largely on the Horahora power, will be seriously inconvenienced, though it will be able to carry on with a restricted supply. The voltage is very low—about 200— and dairymen with low-powered plants may have to resort to hand-milking. The dairy factories, gold mines, flax mills, and quarries in the Thames power area had to be switched off the Government supply, but fortunately most of the dairy factories have auxiliary plants. If the transformers at Arapuni can be connected up, the position should improve by Wednesday.
