FOR HARVEST WORK IN CANADA
RUSH OF UNEMPLOYED IN BRITAIN TO ENROL MANY INTEND TO SETTLE IN DOMINION (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, August 11. The Ministry of Labour announces that the rush of unemployed men to enrol for harvest work in Canada under the Government scheme has been so great that up to yesterday evening 25,000 had applied. Allowing for rejections as tlie result of a civil and medical examination, this number is sufficient to fill the quota of 10,000 required, and accordingly tlie employment exchanges have been instructed to close their lists to further applicants. Tlie scheme has been speedily carried out. It was only ou August 1 that Mr. Amery, Dominions Secretary, announced in tlie House of Commons that arrangements had been made witli the Canadian Government whereby 10,000 men were to be assisted to go to Canada for harvest work. The Canadian Government had expressed a special wish that the men should be recruited from the mining areas. It appears from the official figures that a large majority of the applications have in fact come from the distressed areas of Northern England, Scotland and Wales. Of the 10,000 men required, 3000 will be already o; their way to Canada this week-end. The generally declared intention of the voyagers is to remain In Canada after the harvest, if they can find work.
