THE EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS

SOME NOTABLE DELEGATES ASSOCIATE OF CARDINAL MERCIER Dominion Special Service. Auckland, August 13. Liners from all parts of the globe converging on Australia at the present moment are carrying to the Eucharistic Congress, to be held in Sydney, distinguished leaders of the Catholic Church. It is anticipated that well over one hundred thousand adherents of Catholicism will assemble at Sydney for the impressive ceremonies that will mark the occasion. Included in the passenger list of the Niagara, which made port this afternoon, was a notable contingent. Among the number is Bishop Louis Hayleu, who for twenty-five years has presided over the world’s Eucharistic congresses. He will preside again in Sydney, where the congress will be in session from September 6 to 29. Bishop Heylen was a close associate of Cardinal Mercier during the German occupation of Belgium. As Bishop of Namur he was asked on one occasion to accord a royal welcome to the Emperor of Austria, but he refused on the ground that the only person entitled to such an honour in Namur was the King of the Belgians. On another occasion he left Namur to avoid participation in a reception to the Kaiser, who was making an official visit to the old fortress town on the banks of the Meuse. Ip works for his stricken countrymen he ably seconded the efforts of Cardinal Mercier. Now well advanced in years, he has celebrated his seventy-second birthdaty. Bishop Heylen lias spent his life in service to his church. Another churchman of the party, whose war services single him out for notice outside served his countrymen and his church throughout the war as Dean of Mons of imperishable memory. The most distinguished looking’member of the party, Bishop Mikes, of Zabarria, near Budapest, is also a wealthy count of Hungary. In days of Bela Kun, when the Soviet for a period was in power, Bishop Mikes was imprisoned for several months. He owed his liberation to the Italians. Of the delegation who are on the Niagara five are from Belgium, one from Hungary, and the rest from Canada and the United States. Bishop Deschamps, of Montreal, heads the party from Canada. Members of the Permanent Committee of the Congress are Bishop Heylen (its president), Prince de Croy, Monsignor Lamy and Compte d’Yanville, its secretary. A complete list of those aboard the Niagara is as follows: —Rev. I. Caron, Quebec; Prince F. de Croy, Mons, Belgium ; "Bishop A. Deschamps, Montreal; Rev. E. J. Donnelly, Brooklyn, New York; Rev. 11.
