MAORI CARVINGS AND CURIOS
SALE BY AUCTION. It is some considerable time Since, a collection of Maori carvings and curios has been offered on the local market, and much niterest was evinced in a sale which was held by Messrs. J. H. Bethune, ami Co., at their auction rooms last Friday. There was a large attendance. Keen competition ruled for all of the lots, and fair prices were realised. A large carved food bowl realised £2o, two carved funnels £lO each, a handsome-ly-carved trinket box £2O, a leather box '£l6, ami a splendid specimen of a greenstone mere £-10. Two bone meres fetched £S and £lO respectively, and a carved walking-stick £9 10s. A carved' Maori paddle realised £l2, and a greenstone tiki £l2. Two earved spears sold for '£6 each ami £lO was realised for an extra large taiaha which measured 6ft. Ilin. Eleven taialms were sold at prices'ranging from £4 10s. to £lO, and a blaekstone mere fetched £11; £5 10s. was paid for an old Maori canoe bailer. Amongst the New Zealand books submitted, £l4 ss. was paid i’er the Journals of the Polynesian Society in IS volumes and £7 for the “New Zealand Country Journal” in 11 volumes. Carleton’s “I.ife of Henry Williams” realised £2 Is., McNab s “Mtirihiku” £1 55.. and Tasman to Marsden” £1 10s., and Maori History of the Taranaki Coast £2. and a pamphlet on the case of Mr. Busby £1 17s. 6d. Broun’s Manual of New Zealand Coleoptera was sold for £2 55., and Tregear’s Maori-Polynesian Dictionnry £2 10s. Altogether 12S lots relating solelv to New Zealand were sold at prices which were generally considered satisfactory. ■
