THE NELSON SYSTEM
Sh-j-May I suggest that you should give a concise explanation of what the Nelson system of Bible reading in schools really means. 1 feel sure that thousands of the general public have only a vague idea ol this system, and in view or tne fact that many very important legislative issues may be completely obscured at tne coming election, by misconceptions ot tne “Nelson system,” and Bible reading, 1 am convinced a great benefit will be conferred bv vour compliance with my rc-quest.-I am, etc., Auckland, July 31. ['i'ho Nelson system of religious instruction in schools is so-called because
it was instituted in the schools of Nelson city some thirty years ago. It provides for unsectarian religious instruction between I) a.m. and 9.30 a.m.—outside the legal school hours. The teachers are not necessarily clergymen. The system is carried on by clergy -.i. a> * other teachers, of nil and has been described as a Sunday school on week-days. The Nelson system of religious instruction is not confined to Nelson alone. but is practised in schools in many parts of the Dominion. The instruction is given to nil children whose parents desire it. and it is claimed by the supporters of the system that in the schools where it is given, 90 per cent, of the children attend, irrespective of denominations.J
