“NOT TRUE TO LABEL”
THREE HOTELKEEPERS FINED (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, August 3. In the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., several charges were heard against three hotelkeepers in connection with bottling brandy. Lawrence Patrick Howard (Shamrock Hotel) was charged with possessing a bottle labelled Hennessy’s “Three Star” brandy and using- the bottle without destroying the label; he was also charged with selling liquor not true to label. Mr. F. B. Adams prosecuted, and he said that there had been a number of cases in the north where brandy had been sold in wrongly-labelled bottles. He was unable to say whether or not the brandy sold was of inferior quality to that which was asked for. However, the public must; be protected. The point was. that, the brandy sold to the inspector did not correspond with an analysis of the “Three Star” brandy. Howard was fined £3O .and costs on the first charge, the seconds being withdrawn. John Trengrove (Excelsior Hotel) pleaded guilt to similar charges, and was fined £3O and costs' on the first charge. The latter (that of selling) being withdrawn. Archibald MacDonald (Port Chalmers) pleaded not guilty to similar charges. He was fined £3O and costs, and the second charge was withdrawn.
