TUBERCULOSIS

VALUE OF EARLY TREATMENT

The prevention and treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis was a subject dealt with exhaustively by Dr. G. J. Blackmore, of the Cashmere Sanatorium, in au address to members of Parliament yesterday. The Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young) presided. Emphasising that fresh air and sunlight were (lie best preventives, Dr. Blackmore said it was important to make provision for these factors in architectural designing of houses and buildings. In this connection he commended tlie policy of the Education Department iu so far as open-air schools were concerned.

Discussing the transmission of tuberculosis through milk, Dr. Blackmore corrected what he said was a mistaken idea that germs could bo killed by boiling the milk. Iu the case of cows infected by the disease boiling the milk was of no avail—it would be preferable to boil the cows. (Laughter.) Dr. Blackmore spoke of the good record of recoveries established at Cashmere Sanatorium, and pointed out that treatment in the first stages of the disease was most essential in order to combat its onset successfully.

Several tributes to the work and ability of Dr. Blackmore were paid by speakers in tlie House yesterday during the debate on the annual report of tlie Health Department. Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (IMccarton) said that Dr. Blackmore had proved himself to be tlie leading tuberculosis specialist in New Zealand.
