CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB MEETING TO-DAY THE FIELDS REVIEWED

(By

“The Watcher.’)

The annual race meeting of the Christchurch Hunt Club will be held on the Riccartou course to-day. This fixture of recent years lias attracted more than ordinary attention on account of taking immediate precedence to the Grand Nationals. and the running therefore is closely watched for a line on the more important events to follow. This year some of the fields are thin, but the majority in the chief events are Grand National and Winter Gup winners, so interest will not be lacking. . KENNELS HURDLE HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. About one mile and live furlongs. Rang! Sarto .10 6 Prompter . 9 ~ Gold Town . 10 5 Diana s Lad . 0 0 Gay Jim ... 9 10 Rang! Sarto, provided his recent injury has not affected him. should race well m uie Hunters' Hurdles Goldtowns recent form entitles him to consideration. LIWFORD STEEPLECHASE, of 120 sovs. About two miles. Ranui 11 8 £ al ° n !? Captain Sarto 10 9 Tom Pepper . 0 0 Purirl Jack . 9 3 Master Garland 9 0 Message Boy 9 1 Ranui Is a class above the average hunter, and form at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting a fortnight ago points to Message Boy being dangerous. i MAIDEN STAKES of 100 eovs. Five furlongs. Vnor 9 8 Hurly Burly. 9 0 Shipshape ..9 8 Starshooter .. 9 0 Claymore .. 9 8 I'ilosel ,n n Tam Glen ... 9 8 Bon Raid ... JO Tmwai ....' 9 0 Sarnia 9 u Merivale 9 0 The Viscount. 9 0 The maiden field mostly comprises unknown quantities. There are several wellbred three-year-olds amongst them apd they are generally in the picture. Star Shooter. Hurly Burly and Viscount may all show up. LONGBEACH hurdles HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. About one mile and five Brigadier Bill 10 9 Star Shell . 9 5 peneus ....10 5 Nine of Spades 9 o Scion 9 9 Erin-go-Bragh 9 0 Craigmore ... 9 9 The open hurdles should be an interesting race Brigadier Bill on Trentham form should be prominent. The distance will be quite far enough for Peneus, but be must be respected. He ran second in this race last year. Scion and Craigmore Will attract notice as they are likely sort., for the National, while Star Shell and Nine o’ Spades are a couple of good lightweights. Craigmore, Peneus and Brigadier Bill may carry most support.

HOMEBY STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, of 170 sovs. About two miles and a half. Dubious .... 10 8 Greenstone .. 9 9 Maunga ... 10 S Mainspring . 9 6 Passin' Through 10 3 Although there are only five in the Homeby Steeplechase, four are Grand National candidates. Dubious and Maunga appear likely to share the favouritism. BRABAZON HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. Seven furlougs. Taboo 10 10 Gold Mint .. 9 1 Solferite .... 912 Malmsey .. » 4 Royal Game. 912 Don Jose ... 9 Nincompoop. 912 Mime ...... 9 0 Overdrawn .. 9 9 Red I'uchsia . 9 0 Tanhino ... 9 5 Grand National 9 0 First Sight . 9 5 Royal Saxon. 9 0 According to Riecarton reports, First Sight is the probable favourite, and will go a long way towards justifying the support accorded him. Nincompoop is favourably handicapped on his recent form, and Taboo on his Trentham running will appeal. Tuahine is one who might sprlug a surprise. HUNTERS’ PLATE HANDICAP, of 80 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Locarno .... 12 5 Royal Prompter .. 10 13 Despatch 10 o Gay Jim .... 10 11 Diana's Lad , 10 - Lord Leslie . 10 9 Page Boy .. 10 2 Hyperion ..10 9 Whiffler ... 10 0 Form in the hunters’ hurdles may throw a little light on the flat event. Prompter won a similar class race well at the South Canterbury meeting and appears entitled to most consideration. Lord Leslie is useful when right and Locarno,, of course, is better thau any of them. On breeding Hyperion (Boniform—Pierene) should be equal to good class races. FLYING HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Beau Geste ..10 8 Beaming ... 9 0 Vigilance .. 10 8 Wreath of Kalos 10 8 Myrtle 9 0 Desnot 9 7 Solfello . — 9 0 Meadow Lark 9 5 Broadmoor .. 9 0 Greyfinch ..92 Bolero .... 9 0 Waihemo ..9 2 Scrambler .. 9 0 Waterlow ..9 2 Radiant Light 9 0 Gay Bird ... 'J 0 Lytup 9 0 Recent form points to Beau Geste, Kalos and Meadow Lark being well supported in this race.
