FILMS DURING SCHOOL HOURS
AUCKLAND BOARD SAYS “NO” Dominion Special Service. Auckland, August 1. The merits of education hy motion pictures were considered by the Auckland Education Board during a discussion on a proposal to allow the Educational Fi.’m Service to screen educational films to school children at theatres during school hours. Mrs. N. E. Ferner moved to rescind the board’s resolution not to countenance the attendance of pupils of schools at picture theatres as part of the school work. It would be many years before the Education Department could screen its own films in school buildings, said Mrs. Ferner, and even then it would probably be found that the cost of moving pictures would be too great. Mr. 11. S. W. King said that films were undoubtedly of groat educational value, but some educated in the wrong way. The Technical College hall had been fitted with Ihe necessary apparatus for screening. and it might be possible for primary schools to use the hall on certain days. I [alls at grammar schools might also be fashioned to allow of the screening of motion pictures. It was decided not to grant the application. a motion to rescind the resolution being defeated.
