ONE-ARMED MOTOR DRIVERS
Sir jf the new motor regulations are enforced in their entirety, it will cause a grave injustice to it driver in this neighbourhood. A returned soldier, who lost an arm in the war, invested his .savings in a motor-car to take the mail on a country round. He is married, with; two young children, and has had a mail contract for some time. By his care, attention to his work, punctuality, desire to oblige, and capacity as a driver, he baa earned the confidence of any passengers who travel with him, the goodwill of those on his postal round, and the gooa wishes of all those who see and know Ins " The Premier the other day said the question of prohibiting a one-armed man would be considered, but he did not seem 'to hold out much hope for any alteration, as such a driver would not be able to hold the wheel at the same time as he was signalling that he was going to the right, by the hand. If that is the reason for prohibition of permission to drive a car, surely some mechanical means could be devised to be worked with the elbow to make the signal. If the driver I have spoken of is debarred from making his livelihood as at present, what can he do under his disability? If all drivers were as careful nnd as abstenious as he is, there would be far fewer accidents. If the regular tion is insisted upon in justice to such cases as I have mentioned, it should be possible for a Magistrate .to grant an exception.-! am, etc„ ißs wilsqn> , Bulls, July 28.
