CLAIM AGAINST LICENSEE
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF AWARD
Allegations of a breach of the licensed hotel employees' award were made against S. D. Edilson, licensee of the Terminus Hotel, Wellington, in the Arbitration Court yesterday, the Labour caliming a £lO penalty. The facts of the case, said Mr. Mountjoy, for the defendant, were that defendant had employed a cook in the kitchen at £3 25., and a general hand at £2 Is., who acted as second cook. In addition, he employed a housemaid-waitress mid a waitress to wash plates in the pantry, on the second floor. Defendant had paid the housemaid waitress £1 12s. 6d., and the waitress £1 15s. It was claimed that the housemaid waitress should have received £2 Is. per week as a general hand. His Honour gave judgment for a penalty of £2. adding that defendant was liable for back wages.
